Lori K. Gordon is a visual artist, writer and teacher and the Founder and President of Six Degrees Consortium, which is dedicated to the creation and dissemination of socially significant art. She also co-founded El Fenn Maroc, a Moroccan non-profit whose mission is to preserve and enhance the visual art traditions of the country. Her work first became known nationally with the acquisition by the Smithsonian Institution of her art quilt The Labat Project. Shortly thereafter she launched The Katrina Collection, a massive body of visual storytelling that told the saga of the largest natural disaster to impact the United States. In 2014, she made Morocco her home and co-founded Marrakech Henna Art Cafe, an art cafe and henna salon located in the ancient medina of Marrakech.
Her work may be found in public and private collections around the world. Public collectors include the Smithsonian Institution, Mississippi Humanities Council, Safeco Corporate Collection, University of Southern Mississippi, University of Kentucky, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Art Across Arkansas, a joint venture of Thea Foundation and William J. Clinton Foundation. Marrakech Henna Art Collection is a body of work created from Gordon's studio in Marrakech. The series portrays Moroccan life both present and past, and showcases collaborative work with Moroccan naqashas, the henna artists of the country.
Six Degrees: West to East is a series of collage and mixed media works that are inspired by travels to the Middle East, Europe and Africa. It is made possible with grants from the Mississippi Arts Commission, the Greater Jackson Arts Council and Six Degrees Consortium and further supported by the International Museum of Muslim Cultures. The series incorporates material from Cyprus, Turkey, Italy Israel/Palestine, and Morocco.
The Katrina Collection is a body of mixed media work that incorporates detritus from the worst natural disaster to hit the United States. After the storm ravaged the Mississippi Gulf Coast in August of 2005, Gordon began creating art from the destruction. Pieces of the series can be found worldwide and in many public and private collections including those of President Jimmy and First Lady Rosalynn Carter, ABC's Robin Roberts and superstars Faith Hill and Tim McGraw. Made possible with grants from the Mississippi Arts Commission, the work is ongoing.
The Labat Project is a multi-phase endeavor that is centered on the life of Celestine Labat (1898-2002) of Bay St. Louis, MS. The artist conducted an oral history with Labat during the last two years of her life and created an eight foot by ten foot art quilt that has been acquired by the Smithsonian Institution. The second phase of the project is a traveling exhibit of Labat's narrative and images from her family's archives. The project has been made possible with a generous grant from the Mississippi Humanities Council and the support of the University of Southern Mississippi's Katrina Research Center.
